Georgia and Russia – Let’s play
I have a simple game for you. Let’s choose the first word that is best compatible with “democracy and freedom”.
A: USA
B: Russia
Now you may think that this is the easiest question. “USA” would likely be everyone answer. Since they have so call `election` and they are trying to spread “democracy and freedom” to wherever there is oil. On the other hand, Russia was … center of the evil communist USSR. The grandfather of all the evil things in the world.
However, I am not so sure now if I am going to choose that.
Let’s see the recent quotes from the leaders of these two nations and think for yourself.
DmitryMedvedev: “I’d like you to know, that we support any decision taken by the peoples of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. We will not only support them, but guarantee them in the Caucasus and in the whole world … Right is on your side.”
George W. Bush: “There could be no question that South Ossetia and Abkhazia would remain within Georgian borders – borders that were internationally recognized. There was no room for debate on this matter.”
Basically, Bush said that it does not mather what the people of SO and A is thinking. SO and A would remain within Georgian borders as soon as the international community has recognized them. While, D. Medvedev said that he will support that ever the people of SO and A wants.
Do you feel like changing your answer now? I bet that most people won’t and I have no complain about that. What most people remember is USA = good and Russia = bad. That’s what they are made to believe. I AM NOT saying that Russia is a saint and all bad things you heard about them is false.
What I know for sure is Georgia attacks SO first (Georgian President said it himself) to “restore constitutional order” (to a 16-year-old de facto independent state? ) and kills so many civilians in the process. USA and other western country have refuse to condemn Georgia saying we should respect Georgian border integrity (respects the border even when the government attack the civilians (why don’t you say the same thing to Saddam)).
People of SO has spoken out, twice!. As for democracy and freedom, should we listen to them? (Just like what happen to Kosovo). If you don’t trust their referendum process, how about ask them again with international observers. NOT JUST LET GEOGIAN ATTACK PEOPLE OF SOUTH OSSETIA just for the sake of it is in the INTERNATIONAL RECONIZED border.
As I always say, “Give credit to where is it due.” THIS TIME (I emphasize ‘this time’) Russia has done a good thing as a good super power should do – protect a small country. It may have its own agenda but it did do a good thing. On the other hands, democracy elected Georgian government (and this) attacks civilian for whatever the reason is.
If you do not agree with me, that’s fine. You don’t need to agree with me. I just want you to dig a little deeper checks other medias (that is not your regular media) (Check out France24 for a start).
Give credit where it is due – NOT FROM THE PAST. If you are judging these guys only by what they did in the past, you will not see what is blinding you now.
Just my 2 cents.
