Gnome EasyBackup

March 27th, 2010 nawaman No comments

Some one ask me about Gnome Backup project which has been no progress for a while. I am sorry for you all using the project. The thing is that the project has to be suspended since Gnome has change the way its handle meta data.

At first, Gnome keep all of its meta data in ~/nautilus/metafiles/*.xml files. Each of these XML file is named using URI name of the actual file its represent. It contain is the metadata of the file it represent. Gnome EasyBackup looks into these files to find which have backup related emblems. Then, it creates rdiff-backup command accordingly.

The XML metafiles are now replaced with a new GVFS system which is good for general usages especially in term of performance and reliability. However, the way GVFS tools does not (yet – hopefully) make it easy for searching files with emblems or other metadata (as the operation is planned to be handled by index tools like tracker or beagle).

Since the change (Ubuntu Karma), I was in the last push for completing my degree which have finished it completely just yesterday (Yeah!!), I did not have time to update the project. Unfortunately, I am going back home for a few months to do some family business (get married) and during this time I will not have access much to computer (a very sad thing for a programmer) so the project reviving will have to be postponed once again.

I will definitely updating the project once I have chance. My old habit of deleting and saving file over carelessly still there and this project helped me a lot during a year and a half using it.

Thanks a lot for those of you interested. See you again some time.
